Facebook Account Settings

As you guys would have known, you can view people who have logged in to your facebook account along with their location (city, country). But what you should know is that this feature does not seem to always work. In other words, its not foolproof. Now, I am not a 100% sure why but in my experience, it did not work when I was already logged in from one place and asked the second person to login. It just showed the information pertaining to my login and not the second persons.
I do hope that facebook would find this bug and fix it soon as internet security has become a pain these days.

Indian media is worthless

Every single day I wake up early and stare at the news only to find more murders, rapes, accidents OR celebrity news. Do you think people really care to see what clothes Abhishek Bachan wore for his birthday or why Deepika turned down Rs. 4 crore, in the front page? Ofcourse, a subset, a very small subset does take immense interest in such gossips and that's precisely why supplementaries are printed. If not this, the editors showcase murders, criminals and other thugs who would have committed some crime in a remote village and are definitely not a threat to the metro society.
Hence, I keep asking this question to myself, why can't they focus on some real news, something that would actually benefit others on reading. If you do not understand what am trying to imply, do go and read 'The New York Times', 'Huffington Post' etc. These papers focus on the most important issues currently evident in the world. Even during the massive calamity in Japan, I saw trash articles of celebrities in the front page.
Also, do you think there are no crimes in other parts of the world? I would say Los Angeles, California has a higher crime rate than New Delhi but, the media does not focus on it unless it is really important or a threat. I personally feel that it is not required for a person to know about every petty crime and feel scared to step out of the house. I am not implying that total darkness is bliss, but really necessary issues should only be highlighted.
Most of you might disagree with my views but I would definitely recommend a reading to the above listed news papers before criticism.

My first animation project

Doing higher studies in computer science can sometimes be real fun and also at times be a real pain in the butt. Computer animation sounded like an interesting course to me and I decided to give it a shot. It was about coding in vc++ using openGL libraries. The good side of the course: Got to learn a lot of things, fun times :)

Bad side: The projects at times take a toll on you.

Our first project was to read a .skel file which contains the coordinates of a certain figure and to render that figure.

Hey guys

I know it has been a really long time and I apologize for being dead for the past couple of years. My life was one of the most happening this ever in these past few years. Now that I come to think of it, I regret that time flew and am never going to get those days back again but on the brighter side, there still are a plethora of wonderful events that I would have to face in the future and am very eagerly looking forward for those.

This is just a lame post so just excuse it. I am planing to update this site with all sorts of assorted fun stuff I find. This would be one of those blogs where in you do not look for a particular topic, but the topic looks for you (:P)

Avax Sphere is now Avaxhome

I had earlier written about the death of one avaxsphere, but I am now gald to say that I was mistaken. They, for some reason, have simply changed the URL to their brilliant web portal to avaxhome. Check it out!! Its the very same avax that we all thought was gone.

I know that in a lot of places torrents are illegal, these are for the rest of the world who live on torrents. Here are some of the websites where you can get yourself amazing torrents:

1. Mininova: Most of you might already be knowing about this one. Its very popular for Audio and Video search. But if you want to download any software or book you might not want to look here cause that collection is not great in here. This place is particularly good for subtitles for movies, cause before downloading a torrent of a movie it gives an option for downloading the subtitles for the same movie.

2. IsoHunt: Yet again a very very popular torrent search engine. Excellent for Movies, Songs and also softwares. Yes, here you will find a wide range of amazing stuff if you do the searching properly.

3. Piratebay: Again amazingly good. Has pretty much of everything. The only drawback here is the adult advertisements that go on, on the side. Some people are not comfortable with those.

4. Torrentz: Thsi place is like a google search engine for torrent sites. Don't get me? Its like this, if you don't know where to find your download torrent, go to this place and it will point out all the torrent websites which have the download you are looking for. Pretty neat stuff it does.

5. Axxo: He has earned name and fame over the world for his excellent rips of movies. I too agree with the world about his print qualities, thankyou for everything dude!! And if you don't know about this one, please do check it out. He gives the most amazing, brillent quality movies. One thing ill tell about him is that, you can always trust his prints.

6. btmon: Calls itself the worlds biggest torrent database. I do not completely disagree with it, but being frank, sometimes I don't get what I need in here.

7. Torrentvally: I don't have much to say about this cause I never use this one. Its not because its no good or anything, just that I find what I need generally in '1' or '2'.

There are some more like torrent reactor, torrent portal, bit dig etc. but I never got the chance to try them out.

Solar Eclipse.... its annoying in INDIA

Its fascinating to see the moon block the sun entirely. Well you are not supposed to see it though, but there are ways to watch without watching it with the naked eyes. All this is exciting, except for the fact that people are not supposed to go out of their houses during the eclipse period, they are not supposed to eat stuff and not even drink anything. I still haven't figured out the reason for the last two. The first one might be because of the risk of getting your eyes damaged accidentally, but starving....!!!!
Well if anyone has any answers to this I would love to hear them since my mum also doesn't have the answers.

Weird excuse to get out of work

We have all done some pretty stupid things to get out of work before, like calling in with the excuse that the dog was hit by a car or a grandmother died. Believe me, I have used some weird excuses also, but nothing beats this man in Pasco, Washington. He took it a few steps too far when he had his friend shoot him in order to get out of taking a drug test at work.

Yes, this is in fact a true story. In order to get out of a drug test he was going to take at work, Daniel Kuch called the police and told them he had been shot by someone in a dark car. After investigating, however, deputies discovered that this story didn’t make sense. It then came out that Kuch had a friend shoot him so that he would be injured and able to stay away from work long enough for any drugs to leave his system. Both men have since been arrested, and hopefully others will learn a lesson from this situation. Working sucks, but serving jail time sucks a whole lot more.

Sure, their Human Rights track record looks dingy at best but apparently marital bliss is top of the list for these folks. This nifty, and albeit strange, Chinese invention promises to smooth over a tense marriage.

Well, it’s a twin toilet kinda like a love-seat except you don’t neck. And let’s face it, no one’s going to cuddle on that two-seater.

How to make root beer

1. Using a clean bottle and a dry funnel, add the ingredients in sequence as stated in the steps that follow. First add a level cup of table sugar, (or cane sugar). Adjust the amount to achieve the desired sweetness.

2. Measure out 1/4 teaspoon powdered baker's yeast, and place in the funnel. The yeast should be fresh and active, and any brand that is available will work.

3. Shake well to make sure that the yeast grains are distributed evenly into the sugar.

4. Swirl the sugar/yeast mixture in the bottom in order to make it concave and enable it to catch the extract in the middle.

5. Replace the funnel, and add 1 Tbsp of root beer extract on top of the dry sugar.
Notice how the extract sticks to the sugar. This will help dissolve the extract as seen in the next few steps .

6. Fill the bottle halfway with fresh cool tap water that has only a little chlorine. Pour through the funnel and use this opportunity to rinse extract stuck to the funnel and tablespoon. Swirl to dissolve the ingredients.

7. Fill the bottle to the neck, this time with fresh water, leaving only about an inch (2.54cm) of head space. Securely screw the cap so as to seal the bottle. Invert repeatedly to thoroughly dissolve the contents.

8. Place the sealed bottle at room temperature for about three or four days until the bottle feels hard to a forceful squeeze. Then move it to a cool place (below 65 F (18 C)). Refrigerate overnight to thoroughly chill before serving. Crack the lid of the bottle just a little to release the pressure slowly.

Are you bored of the mundane start-up or shut-down screen provided by microsoft? Well here is a way to customize them.

There are three files which makeup the startup and shutdown screens, they are:

LOGO.SYS - The startup screen, usually located in your C:\ directory.

LOGOW.SYS - The 'Please wait...' screen, usually located in your c:\windows directory.

LOGOS.SYS - The 'It's now safe to turn off your computer.' screen, usually located in your c:\windows directory.

These files are standard 256 color Windows bitmap files with dimensions of 320(w) x 400(h). You can use basically any image editing program to change them (as long as it supports BMP files).

Warning: Before getting started make sure to take a backup copy of all three files (LOGO.SYS may or may not already exist).

1. Copy LOGOW.SYS and LOGOS.SYS to a temporary folder, and rename their extensions to .BMP

2. Using your favorite graphics editor, open the files and modify them to your liking.

3. Once your finished, save the files, change their extensions back to .SYS, and copy them back over the original files in the Windows directory (which you've already backed-up) and you're done.

Alternatively you can create three new BMP files for each screen, just make sure that the proportions of 320(w) x 400(h) are maintained. The file once finished should be 129,078 bytes.

1. Assume I want to lock a folder named 'new' which I have created in c drive.
2. Go to the path (in this case its c:\) create a new notepad entry.
3. Then edit that entry by typing in it the following:
ren new new.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
4. Save it as lock.bat
5. Now if you run the .bat file your icon 'new' should have changed. Try clicking it now.
6. For creating a key, open an other notepad entry and write:
ren new.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} new
7. Save it as key.bat and run it.

Swift DZire - The latest offering from Maruti Suzuki

Maruthi-Suzuki just launched the sedan version of the Swift calling it the Swift DZire which replaces the venerable Maruti Esteem. The car which features the same engine options as the hatchback Swift, 1.3 Petrol and Diesel options will cost around Rs 1 lakh more than comparable versions of the Swift.

Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said that the company had decided to stay with the old G13 engine from the Esteem and the Swift because the newer M-series engine family as on the SX4 would have added significantly to the costs. India is the only country where the Swift is sold with the old G-series engine.

Say you are in a place with a computer (Some people I know will have a very shrewd idea about the place I am talking about :D) where you do not have the access some folders, drives or some options like RUN, SEARCH etc and also you don’t know the password to access the admin account to open these.

First of all there would have been a reason for the administrator to block such options, but you like me either have a very special purpose for accessing it, or want to do it just for fun. Well, guess what? I am going to teach you some neat hacking tricks here to do some really cool stuff.

P.S The tricks I am about to teach you are very hard to find, also on the other hand always remember the system administrator is definitely smarter than you (its not so in my case ;P)

In general cases the above mentioned restrictions are generally controlled by the WINDOWS REGISTRY. But if the administrator is a smart one he would use the main server to do it. If the second case is true then the below mentioned tricks might not work. I will teach you network hacking in later sessions.

The admin uses a tool called the POLICY EDITOR or PLOEDIT to alter the changes in the windows registry. This software does not install with windows, but one has to install it from the windows disc. This policy editor imposes restrictions by modifying the user.dat file.

So if you want to bypass or terminate such restrictions what do you do? Edit the policy editor what else. To do this first launch the registry editor.

Now go to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies

Search and find a key names ‘explorer’ under the above key. Now under this ‘explorer’ key we can create new DWORD values and change its value to 1 for restricting it. Similarly if you want to remove a restriction simply change the value to 0 or delete the DWORD.

Here are some examples of some DWORD values that can be created for restrictions:

NoRun: Disables RUN command

NoFind: Disables FIND command

NoDrives: Hides all drives

(There are plenty of more commands to restrict various other stuff, for more commands you are welcome to leave a comment about what you want.)

So you see how simple it is. But there is one glitch here. What if the administrator blocks the REGISTRY EDITOR? Are you in a fix? Don’t worry, cause the solutions here.

Go to the windows directory, delete either the user.dat file or the system.dat file and reboot. When windows logs in, it will show a warning or error about windows registry. Overlook the message and press CTRL+ALT+DEL to get out (Do not press OK)

There is much more to this hack, but I am going to tell you this much right now. If you really wish to know more, you are welcome to comment about you suggestions.

(All of these work in windows 98, me. For windows xp one has to do some minor changes. If not able to interpret, can always ask me for help.)

1. Quick shutdown: Generally you have to move your mouse to the start button, click on it and then click shutdown. Yet again windows asks you whether to shutdown, logoff or go to standby mode. Well here's a method by which you can shutdown your windows in a click of your mouse.

Create a new shortcut in the desktop, then in the command line of the shortcut type:
c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindowsexec
(NOTE: The path might differ according to the drive which has windows.)

Now all you have to do is to click this shortcut to shutdown windows.

There are a lot more stuff I would like to share and explain but right now am a bit occupied, so excuse me for late postings.

The "Star Wars" universe, already substantially rendered by computer generated imagery, is giving in all the way to animation.George Lucas wanted to explore more "Star Wars" ideas. "The Clone Wars" is the result.

"Star Wars: The Clone Wars," an animated film, will open in theaters August 15 and be followed by a TV series of the same name, to air on the Cartoon Network and TNT this fall.
"I felt there were a lot more 'Star Wars' stories left to tell," said "Star Wars" creator George Lucas in a statement. "I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the animation forward."Produced by Lucasfilm Animation, both the film and TV show will be distributed through Time Warner Inc., which owns TNT, the Cartoon Network and the film's distributor, Warner Bros. (Time Warner is also the parent company of CNN.)
Lucas, who serves as executive producer, is also planning a live-action television series spinoff of the franchise, which he began working on last fall. The animated series has long been in the works, though the theatrical release was only announced late Tuesday.
The movie and subsequent series takes place between the ground covered in episodes II and III of the "Star Wars" films: "Attack of the Clones" (2002) and "Revenge of the Sith" (2005). It will include cartoon versions of many familiar characters, including Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padme Amidala and General Grievous.
A new character named Ahsoka, Anakin's padawan, will be the first female Jedi to be a character of focus.
"It turned out to be an idea that George wanted to explore," said Dave Filoni, director of the "Clone Wars" movie and supervising director of the series. "Henry Gillroy (a writer on the series) and I very much wanted to have a female Jedi in more of a lead role because you've had all the boys."More than 30 episodes are planned, though Filoni declined to say exactly how long the show will run. He acknowledged it's a finite timeline before encroaching on "Revenge of the Sith" story lines.
Though the "Star Wars" films have been extraordinarily lucrative, the force won't be expected to be as strong in cartoon form. The film and series are clearly aimed at younger viewers, though Filoni hopes to also entice the many "Star Wars" die-hard fans.
"An animated series always appeals more to a younger audience," said Filoni. "But at the same time, we've tried to do some sophisticated things and ensure that we are going to satisfy the broad spectrum of 'Star Wars' fans."
Though Lucas farms out various "Star Wars" projects in what's known as the " 'Star Wars' expanded universe," Filoni says that Lucas ensured "The Clone Wars" has "that 'Star Wars' feeling."
Fans will also remember other animated series following the first time Lucas completed a "Star Wars" trilogy. After "Return of the Jedi," the series "Ewoks" and "Droids" ran in the late '80s.

This one is very interesting .Beleive it or not nearly half of British men surveyed would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, a survey perhaps unsurprisingly carried out for a firm selling televisions .Electrical retailer Comet surveyed 2,000 Britons, asking them what they would give up for a large television, one of the latest consumer "must-haves."
The firm found 47 percent of men would give up sex for half a year, compared to just over a third of women.According to the firm it seems that size really does matter more for men than women.

Increase Your MMC (MultiMediaCard) Space

Your files in MMC are stored in multiple (disk) blocks.So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K.If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore alot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K.You will need a card reader to do this:-
1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk. (Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")

2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format. Make sure you select FAT. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.(Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size)

3. Copy back all files to MMC.Now you will find that you will have more space.256mb MMC got back 30+ mbs

Use your USB device to LOCK your PC

Wanna know how to lock your computer just by removing the USB stick connected to it..??

This trick will boot lock your PC, which can't be started without the USB stick which contains the boot files. In short, you can use your USB stick as a key.

Caution: You will be playing with the boot files and the BIOS settings of your computer, I recommend you to do two things before attempting this trick.
1. Have a windows recovery disc.
2. Create a system restore point.

Here are the steps:

1. Unhide all the files which are hidden and protected by going into any folder->click tools->folder options->view->show all hidden files and also un-check the hide protected system files.

2. Go to the drive in which windows is installed. (Generally its c:\) Search for the files
boot.ini
ntdlr
NTDETECT.COM
then copy all these files onto your USB stick.

3. Now restart the computer, press 'del' or in come cases 'F8' to enter the BIOS setup. Now once in BIOS enable USB device as your first boot device. Save the changes and reboot the system.

4. Now if all is fine you will be able to log into windows. (If not, goto the BIOS again and change the first boot device to hard disc). Once you are into windows rename the boot.ini file to boot.bak

5. Remove the USB stick and restart the system. Your will get error messages saying invalid boot.ini or windows could not start.

6. Now try plugging in your USB disc and restart. Volla!!

Microsoft/Yahoo merger won’t dethrone Google

A Microsoft/Yahoo merger would pose some new challenges for Google, but it will take more than Microsoft’s proposed $44,6bn acquisition of Yahoo to knock the king of search off its throne. Google’s search market share was 58,4% in December, while Yahoo and Microsoft combined for almost 33% of the market, says Allen Weiner, Gartner’s lead Google analyst. Yahoo holds 22,9% and Microsoft 9,8% of the market, he says.
"It has not been Microsoft’s stated mission, but under its breath Microsoft has always wanted to take on Google," Weiner says.
But there is no reason to think Google’s market share domination will change, even in the face of the combined might of Microsoft and Yahoo, he says. "This is no cause for alarm for Google. It came into this business with no market share. Yahoo was in business before it, Microsoft was in business before it, so obviously it has done things right to become the market leader in search and search advertising."
Microsoft’s $44.6bn offer might actually benefit the smaller search players Ask.com and AOL, both of which can claim to be solid alternatives at a time when the futures of Microsoft and Google are somewhat up in the air. "During say, the first quarter of this year, I think that there is a window of opportunity for both AOL and Ask to get some dollars," Weiner contends. Microsoft’s bid comes in the same week as Yahoo stock hit its lowest point in a year, and Yahoo confirmed plans to lay off 1000 employees.
Despite Yahoo’s troubles, Microsoft and Yahoo together would have some unique capabilities that might pose a challenge to Google, says Jennifer Simpson, a Yankee Group analyst. While search, Google’s key strength, remains a vital part of how we interact with the Internet, search won’t necessarily be the "be-all and end-all" going forward, she says.
To deliver targeted advertising most effectively, companies such as Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have to look beyond search to things like social networks and other online forums that will provide a more holistic understanding of online behaviour, she adds.
E-mail is one area that can help companies to understand users, and Yahoo and Microsoft both have more e-mail users than Google, she says. Moreover, Yahoo is fostering social networks with Yahoo 360 and Yahoo Answers, while Microsoft has a Facebook alternative called Windows Live Spaces.
"I don’t know if Google has a holistic understanding of new behaviours going on online, and the concept and formation of groups," Simpson says.
While Microsoft and Yahoo together will be a more formidable competitor to Google than the companies alone, Weiner says we won’t be able to measure the real impact on Google until joint Microsoft/Yahoo products are announced.
Obvious questions include: What happens to Windows Live Search?; Will all consumer products be delivered through Yahoo?; and: Will the companies deliver a combined product?
Most importantly, Weiner thinks a Microsoft/Yahoo venture needs a strong leader. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, probably would not be the guy, because he doesn’t seem to be "the main influencer in the media portion of their business," Weiner says.
A Microsoft/Yahoo company "would have an enormous global footprint that needs to have a leader that will reflect that," he concludes.

Microsoft Would Borrow To Fund Yahoo Acquisition, CFO Says

In a sign of just how badly Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) wants Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), the software maker's CFO said Monday that the company would borrow cash for the first time to fund its proposed $44.6 billion acquisition of its Internet rival. Microsoft had previously said it would use a mix of stock and cash to purchase Yahoo.

CFO Chris Liddell on Monday said the cash portion of the deal would be more than $20 billion. He added that Microsoft could cover that amount with existing cash, but would prefer to use external funding for a portion of it. "We could fund most of that through our cash holdings, but it's likely we're actually going to borrow for the first time. It will be a mixture of the cash on hand, plus debt," Liddell, speaking to a group of financial analysts, said of Microsoft's Yahoo bid. Liddell didn't say how much external financing Microsoft would seek.

Liddell's disclosure shouldn't be too surprising. Microsoft had about $21.1 billion in cash and cash equivalents at the end of its most recent quarter. So the company, in the absence of turning to the capital markets, would have to use virtually all its cash -- plus more than $20 billion in stock to buy out Yahoo.
Microsoft's cash reserves took a hit last year when the company completed its $6 billion acquisition of digital advertising agency aQuantive. The deal, which closed in August, was an all-cash transaction. Microsoft's offer values Yahoo at $31 per share, which represents a 62% premium over Yahoo's closing stock price the day before Microsoft's announcement Friday that it intends to purchase the company.
Microsoft's willingness to go into hock to acquire Yahoo is an indication of the strategic importance it places on the deal as it seeks to catch Google in the Web search and advertising markets. "We're trying to increase scale and increase capacity to give ourselves a better chance to be more successful more quickly," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at Monday's analyst meeting.
Yahoo has said it is considering Microsoft's offer, but it has yet to respond formally.
Also at the analysts meeting, Liddell declined to say whether Microsoft was already buying up Yahoo stock on the open market in an effort to exert greater control over the company's board. "No comment," Liddell said in response to a question on the subject.
